What makes zeolite useful for turf is its structure. It's porous and negatively charged, which means it physically absorbs urine and, through a process called ion exchange, traps ammonium ions before they can gas off as ammonia. Ammonia gassing off is what actually causes that sharp, unmistakable synthetic turf smell, so stopping it at that stage means there's nothing left to smell later.

The cooling effect

The same porous structure that traps ammonium also holds moisture, and that has a second benefit: it cools the surface.
